Hair Extensions 10 Things You Should Know

10. DIY Extensions

6. Inspect some more

I’ve heard many stylists claim that, if applied professionally, extensions can’t damage your hair. Don’t fall for this, girls! It’s a huge lie! Permanent hair extensions put a lot of stress on your hair and, once you take them off, you’ll need to shorten it and let it rest and recover. Yes, the extensions must go off at some point ¬– proper handling will keep them looking good for 6 months or so, but they do have to be replaced after that. Old extensions tend to knot and fall out – any pro hair stylist will tell you that.

Once new hair is added to you head, it becomes a part of you. You can style it, wash it and do everything you normally do with your hair… as long as you do it carefully and slowly. You can’t pull or brush it too hard and you should not try to dye the extensions. Check-ups and retouches are a must too so don’t put extensions if you can’t afford a retouch every month.

8. Get acquainted with natural extension types

You don’t have to be a pro to notice that the hair you got is not the hair you paid for. So, don’t be shy to ask if you could see your extensions before they are attached to your natural hair. If the extensions look shabby or you can see it’s not the 100% natural hair you asked for, return them and ask for new ones. Yes, you can do that! It’s your money!

2. Extensions do make certain damage 9. Maintenance

Extensions are like stunt work and experiments – you shouldn’t try them at home. I’ve heard of some girls trying to make their own extensions using keratin glue and flat iron – No! No! No! The point of this procedure is to have longer, thicker hair, not to destroy the one you already have. Right? So leave it to the pros and, if your extensions start falling out, you have the right to ask for a free retouch.

Knowing what’s free and what you have to pay for is very important, girls. Hair extensions don’t exactly come cheap so getting ripped off is definitely not in your best interest. Consultations should be free, the same goes for the first follow up and corrections in case your extensions get messed up during the first couple of days.

Check your hairstylist’s credentials! “I can do it” won’t keep your extensions looking perfect for months, take my word for it. You should be allowed to see his/her portfolio, certificates and awards. In fact, a pro will have all of these laid out in front of you before you even get the chance to ask “How much it will cost me?".

Clip-ons extensions! If you ask me, this is the best, most budget-friendly option out there. Plus, you can decide when, if and how often you want to wear them, so your hair won’t suffer great damages. You can have them custom made for you or buy some of the readymade solutions, it all depends on your budget, preferences and how often or how long you want to use your extensions.

Now, tell me, what do you think about hair extensions? I’ve always wanted to try those but they are pretty expensive and, somehow, I’ve never managed to put them on my list of priorities. But I’m sure there are girls that had them done. Right? So, please, ladies, share some first hand experiences.

3. Take clip-ons into your consideration 1. Hair type

A hairstylist can use many ways to attach your extensions – braiding, sewing, gluing, tying, weaving etc. It’s his job to determine which technique will work best for your hair type, hair extensions, of course, but, in order to make sure you’re really getting the most out of it, you might want to put Google into good use.

Hair extensions are quite a magic trick aren’t they? Just imagine that! It takes one day to make your hair twice or even three times longer so, yes, you can have your gorgeous, long locks back even if you messed up big time and told your hairstylist to cut your hair short. Now, there are some things you need to know before you proceed with hair extensions. And don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you with my usual “Natural is more beautiful” phrases. I’m about to give you some tips and explanations so, once you decide to have your brand new extensions installed, you’ll be totally sure you’ve made a good decision. So here’s what you need to know:

Natural hair can be Remy, non-Remy, with cuticles removed and silicone coated. Remy hair has overlapping cuticles, this hair is one of most natural looking ones and it’s comes from a human donor’s head. Non-Remy hair can be described as “second hand” hair because it’s mostly collected from brushes and whatnot. It is natural but not as shiny as Remy type because cuticles in this type are not going in the same direction. If you want extra shine you can choose between the hair without cuticles and the one coated with silicone. These types are a great quick fix but they are no match for Remy.

The hair used for your extensions can be synthetic or human, it all depends on the look you’re trying to achieve and your budget, of course. Human hair is a more expensive but definitely better, more natural looking option. However, not all human hair costs the same. Did you know, for example, that hair from European donors costs more than the hair from Asian donors?
